I’m glad to see you here.
I’m Jonas’s dad and I look after him day and night. All the photos and footage used in the YouTube video are real, and every word of my song is true and reflects my personal experience. It’s important that everyone can easily identify the parts created by AI. I’ve labelled one section ‘symbolic representation’.

What is ME/CFS?

Imagine you had severe migraines. Every ray of light, every sound causes you terrible pain. Your digestion goes haywire and new symptoms keep cropping up. You never know what the next day will bring. If you summon all your strength, you can manage to get things done in your daily life. But you usually pay a high price for it: you’re completely wiped out afterwards, often not until the following day. You’re forced to lie in bed in agony. And it goes on and on, getting worse and worse. Your doctors tell you you’re healthy and that you shouldn’t make such a fuss, and that you should do more exercise. If you’re unlucky, you’ll end up in a psychiatric ward straight away. You can find more detailed information online. For example, at https://www.omf.ngo/what-is-mecfs/.

You’ll find most of my experiences in this PDF brochure (in English). Finding a good doctor for ME/CFS is extremely important, but it’s often like looking for a needle in a haystack. Get in touch with a support group in your area. Here in southern Germany, near Freiburg, there are actually several support groups, such as the Initiative ME/CFS Freiburg. Without the support of so many people, including our GPs, Jonas would probably no longer be alive.

How did Jonas become so seriously ill?

Jonas probably has a genetic predisposition to ME/CFS and had previously contracted the Epstein-Barr virus. In late 2013, he came down with an infection. The fever subsided, but he was left with persistent weakness, and further symptoms such as gastrointestinal and swallowing problems, as well as headaches, began to emerge. He had to give up all his hobbies, such as acting and jogging. A gastrointestinal infection triggered another downward spiral in the spring, and countless tests and doctor’s appointments followed. It was traumatic to have doctors suggest that he was merely imagining it all and wasn’t actually ill. The treatment at the university hospital in 2014 was pure horror and is symbolically depicted in the music video. He was still able to walk in. He came out emaciated to 41 kg, with five pressure ulcers and an antibiotic-resistant Pseudomonas infection. At home, together with our wonderful GP Dr Schwald, we managed to pull him back from the brink of death over the following six months. But it was a real close call. Why are most doctors unfamiliar with ME/CFS?

Chief Physician Prof. Gerner explained this clearly in Freiburg in 2024 (Youtube-Video, in German). I also discuss this on page 17 of my P DF brochure on Jonas (in English).

I don’t have any money to donate. What can I do?

Ask your doctors what they do for ME/CFS patients. If they don’t know about ME/CFS – why not? How can a doctor not know about a condition that leaves millions of people around the world so terribly ill? In Germany alone, the number is estimated to be as high as one million! You wouldn’t know it to look at most of them, because they aren’t as severely affected as Jonas.
See if there are any ME/CFS sufferers in your neighbourhood. Even if you can just take some of the daily household chores off their hands, you’ll be helping to break the downward spiral of ME/CFS.
Most importantly: talk to friends and family about the issue. Raise awareness.

Is JustMe (icke) an artist? An influencer?

There are plenty of people who sing in public and really ought to give it a miss. Comedians, for example. It’s quite possible that many will say the same about me. But people sing so little in Germany that it sounds really bad when they do. So I don’t stand out that much. I just enjoy music. I don’t need to be an artist. Even if ‘Just ME’ is my ‘stage name’. Isn’t the video a bit silly for such a tragic illness?

I don’t know how Jonas manages to cope with the constant loneliness and darkness, along with all those terrible symptoms. Perhaps he makes up fantasy stories when he’s feeling better? – There are already plenty of excellent documentaries that show the misery of this illness. But I can well understand that someone who wants to relax on YouTube after a hard day’s work isn’t in the mood for such serious videos. It is precisely these people I want to reach with my video. And to highlight the stark contrast between Jonas’s zest for life – if only he could! – and his cruel daily reality.

There’s far too much going on in the video at once; no one with ME/CFS could watch it, could they?

That’s intentional. I want to spark curiosity and I want people to watch the video several times. So that the complex messages about ME/CFS get across. Not ME/CFS sufferers – they can barely watch the video, but they know the score anyway – but healthy people who are used to ‘demanding’ videos. Whether it’s details about Jonas’s taste in music, a dragonfly moving across the top of the screen, or an ironic reference to the dragon playing the bongos: I want to reach as many groups as possible who have hardly ever watched ME/CFS documentaries before.

Are there any positive experiences reported by ME/CFS patients in hospitals?

Yes. In autumn 2025, the BDH Clinic in Waldkirch took excellent care to accommodate Jonas’s high sensitivity to sensory stimuli (noise, light) and other needs. As well as is even possible in a standard clinic. Unfortunately, however, this is still the exception. As can be seen in the video in the hospital section, this is still how things usually go today – and it’s often much worse! For the care of ME/CFS patients, it will depend on the medical profession as a whole finally taking on board the findings regarding ME/CFS. I have described why this is so difficult on page 17 of Jonas – (No) Life with ME/CFS.

Is that an AI video?

No, not really. I did use a lot of AI, though! That’s why I used the hashtag #aimusicvideo. You could say the hospital bit is like that, even though the AI-generated scenes recreate the real trauma from 2014. The song is AI-free – you can tell from my not-so-perfect voice. And all the photos I used in this video are real. I also used lots of old videos I’d filmed myself. Apart from the quality enhancement via DaVinci Resolve, it’s completely unaltered. I often used a real photo as the opening image, too. The first image in the video is actually my favourite laptop wallpaper, and I’ve had it as my wallpaper for years. In the AI video disclosure, I have listed the scenes in which AI was used. The Tech/AI page also provides a general description of the use of all technical tools, including artificial intelligence.
